During the civil rights movement, another young man came forth to help black people fight the unjust treatment they were receiving. His name was Malcolm X. He was twenty-seven years old. When I look back, this strong-willed man reminded me somewhat of my grandfather. He was full of conviction and pride in his race. The last time I saw him, he was speaking in Detroit, and he signed a program for me.

I admired the way he had changed his position from one of distrust toward whites to one of tolerance and building self-respect among blacks. His ideas were different than what many of us heard publicly, but his strong conviction of self-determination and pride energized blacks in economic development. The way he stood up and voiced himself showed that he was a man to be respected.
